Organix Finger Foods Snack - Review

We were sent some of the new Organix Red Pepper Hearts and Cherry Rice cakes to try and review

Baby M is at the stage where he is exploring new foods and textures, we thought these snacks would be ideal.

First we tried the Red Pepper Hearts first.  These cost 75p per bag

The hearts are made from organic corn with red pepper and carrot flavouring added to each heart.

They were a huge hit with Baby M, he loved them.  They are a great size and shape for him to hold.  They are easy for him to eat too.  He sucks on them and they dissolve really well and bits break off so he can chew them.

The Cherry Rice Cakes (£1.19) are small round rice cakes which are great for little fingers to hold.  They contain the juice of cherries and apples in each rice cake.  They are firmer than the hearts and I think this might have put Baby M off a little as they didn't dissolve in his mouth as easily.  They are aimed at children who are ready to start feeding themselves and I'm not sure Baby M is quite at the right stage yet.  Baby M did enjoy sucking all the cherry off these however when he was having a bad teething day he didn't seem to want to eat them.

I will definitely be buying the Red Pepper Hearts again as these were a favourite of Baby M's.

The only thing that would make these snacks even better is if they were resealable.  Baby M only had 1 or 2 rice cakes or hearts at a time.  There is a good quantity in both packets and as a parent you want them to last and stay fresh for as long as possible.

I would recommend these as snacks for your child, especially when they are exploring finger foods and different textures and shapes.

Check out the Organix website and sign up to their No Junk Challenge.  There are some great recipes on the website to try.

Disclaimer: I was sent these products free of charge to review however all views are my own

Weaning update

Our weaning journey is continuing.

I know that Baby Led weaning is pushed but Baby M just isn't keen on it.  Maybe it's because he's a boy - people keep telling me boys are lazy.

As you know we started weaning when Baby M was just over 5 months.

I tried making my own purees but he just wasn't keen on them.  I had someone tell me it takes 10x or more for a baby to like something - REALLY?? Here's me trying everything once - NOT!  I tried for about 3 weeks with no luck so I turned to jars and pouches.

He loves them!

He's tried such a wider variety of tastes too than I would have been able to give him or even thought of.

When Baby M turned 7 months we started to introduce more lumpier jars/pouches.  We've had some funny reactions to the lumps but I think we are getting there.  He needs to understand that food isn't runny.

I give him a spoon as well as the one I'm using so he can feed himself if he likes.  He does sometimes hold onto the spoon I use and we feed him together (if I let go he lets go).  I praise him when he does hold onto the spoon and smile lots.  I also let him put his hands into the bowl and feel the food.  He has yet to put his fingers in his mouth to eat what's on his fingers.

I have also been giving him breadsticks and Heinz Biscotti - he loves to eat them when I hold them but won't feed himself.  I have some fruit pieces to try this week with him

He used to point blank refuse water but now he will take some from his cup but again when I hold it.  When I encourage him to do it himself he just throws it around banging it off the floor/seat.

He is slowly cutting out bottles himself.  At breakfast he has porridge and sometimes he will refuse a bottle after.  At lunch as well he will only have a 100-150ml bottle at times.

How have other mums found weaning?  Any tips to get Baby M to feed himself?

Our weaning journey

The recommendation is that you try not to start weaning until your child is 6 months old.  We couldn't wait that long as Baby M just wasn't getting satisfied by his bottles.

I feel like I have no idea what I am doing.

Yes there are some great guides out there but I still feel a little lost

Breakfast is well established, Baby M loves his porridge.

Baby M still has a bottle at every "meal time" as I don't think he would be getting enough nutrients from food at the moment

We have been introducing different tastes & textures.  At both lunchtime and teatime.

LOVES
Butternut Squash
Sweet Potato
Pear
Peaches

A LITTLE UNSURE OF
Carrot
Peas
Apple

DOESN'T APPEAR TO LIKE
Parsnip
Califlower
Broccoli

Baby M's response to a lot of food we've tried can best be described as a shudder.  It reminds me of when you try something bitter and your whole body shudders.

I tried him with a jar too - Sweet Chicken and Potato.  His reaction at first was a shudder but then his mouth kept opening for more.  This is a better reaction than with some of the vegetables I've made from scratch as he usually shudders then clamps his mouth shut.

My plan is to start mixing foods together.  I have Annabel Karmel's book - New Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner so I am hoping some of these will be a hit.  I really want to try and make my own food rather than use jars.

How has weaning gone for others?  What struggles did you have?

We have started our weaning journey

We have been considering weaning Baby M for a number of weeks now but have been trying to hold off for as long as we could.

When he started to cry after finishing every bottle we thought maybe it was time to try and introduce baby rice

We used Aptamil baby rice as this is the formula we use, we thought it would be best to stick with the same brand.  Baby M was not impressed!! At first he held it in his mouth looking at me as if to say "mum what's this you've stuck in my mouth".  Then he would pull funny faces like he didn't like the taste.  We tried a few times with the same reaction so we thought maybe we were wrong and he wasn't ready.

I spoke to some of the mums at swimming class and one said that her little girl hadn't liked baby rice and that she had tried baby porridge.  We thought it was worth a try.  If he didn't like that we decided we would wait a few weeks and try again

The first time we tried the porridge Baby M appeared to like it straight away.  He even opened his mouth for more - he had never done this with baby rice

The second time we tried porridge Baby M did his excited wiggling and arm waving and had his mouth wide open.  He had more of the porridge than the first time too

Baby M is 5 months old next week, I think we will continue with the porridge for another week or 2 if we can manage that then look at introducing fruits and veg

How did you find weaning?

Weaning visit from Health Visitor

We haven't heard from our health visitor since Baby M was 7 weeks old, we contacted the office last week as we were concerned that Baby M has been finishing his 7oz bottles.  It turns out our health visitor is on long term sick leave.  Another health visitor came out to see us to have a chat about our options with Baby M but also to give us our weaning chat.

Firstly we had a chat about Baby M and his development.  He loves standing and was doing his standing man when the health visitor arrived - she was really impressed and pleased with how strong he appears on his legs.  She thinks he might stand/walk before he crawls as he would rather be standing than sitting.  She was also happy with his babbling (he started to get tired not long after she arrived and he started his "dring dring" routine)

It was reassuring for us to hear everything was as it should be and that we are doing things that we should.  As first time parents we often feel we are winging it and making it up as we go along.

We then turned the discussion to Baby M and his appetite.  He has always been a hungry-ish baby but recently he has been having all of his bottles and instead of waiting 4 hours between feeds it's now 3 hours.  The health visitor informed us that babies go through a growth spurt at 4 months and this could account for his increase in appetite.  She encouraged us to stick with our current approach and see how we get on.  If we can manage to get to 5 months she stated this would be better to start introducing baby rice but she also recognised that we might not be able to wait that long.

We then had a chat about weaning in general.  We are going to cook our own food for Baby M and use pouches/bottles at a minimum.  I've seen a great product from Fill and Squeeze that I want to get for when we are going out and about, that way we can have our own food in pouches - brilliant!!

We talked about the fruits that we can give Baby M (apples, pears, melons) and vegetables (all really but especially carrot, butternut squash, sweet potato, potato). After 6 months we can look at introducing meats and fish.  The health visitor gave us a great booklet to read that has lots of information in.

We need to get some round flat weaning spoons and some bowls.  We also need to get some tubs to store the food we make in as we will only need small amounts to start with.  I can see our freezer being full of tiny tubs!

Our next visit will be between 7-9 months old and they will check his development further and chat to us about the next stage of weaning.
