We have started our weaning journey

We have been considering weaning Baby M for a number of weeks now but have been trying to hold off for as long as we could.

When he started to cry after finishing every bottle we thought maybe it was time to try and introduce baby rice

We used Aptamil baby rice as this is the formula we use, we thought it would be best to stick with the same brand.  Baby M was not impressed!! At first he held it in his mouth looking at me as if to say "mum what's this you've stuck in my mouth".  Then he would pull funny faces like he didn't like the taste.  We tried a few times with the same reaction so we thought maybe we were wrong and he wasn't ready.

I spoke to some of the mums at swimming class and one said that her little girl hadn't liked baby rice and that she had tried baby porridge.  We thought it was worth a try.  If he didn't like that we decided we would wait a few weeks and try again

The first time we tried the porridge Baby M appeared to like it straight away.  He even opened his mouth for more - he had never done this with baby rice

The second time we tried porridge Baby M did his excited wiggling and arm waving and had his mouth wide open.  He had more of the porridge than the first time too

Baby M is 5 months old next week, I think we will continue with the porridge for another week or 2 if we can manage that then look at introducing fruits and veg

How did you find weaning?

Useful travelling items - what we found useful going on holiday

We found a few items helpful whilst we were away.  Now I know these items won't be helpful to everyone as we were lucky that the caravan is my folks but I would take these items for visiting family too.

Sleeping

We got our travel cot from kiddicare, I was a little worried that Baby M wouldn't like it as he's only slept in his moses basket but he slept fine the first night and the rest of the time we were away.  We got a mattress as well to make sure his sleep was super comfortable and slept him in sleeping bags rather than sheets.  We will also do this when he moves to his cot as he kicks his sheets off at times in the moses basket and I would be worried he will smother himself.  Sleeping bags are a great idea as they keep baby cosy but safe.  We also put him in his sleeping bag before bed so we didn't have to faff about and wake him up.  I don't mind changing his nappy with the sleeping bag on but Mr M isn't so keen.

Feeding

We bought a travel steriliser from Morrison's, it's a kiddicare one.  It was rubbish!! It says you can fit 2 bottles in it, I don't know how!! We had to put one bottle and put it on it's side.  The top didn't fit that great either.  In the end (after lots of stressing on my part) we bought an Avent Classic from Argos and left that at the caravan.  My mum will take it to her house for when we go and visit.  For feeding Baby M on the go we were probably a little lazy and got the pre made Aptamil bottles.  We thought this was a much easier way to feed him as we would be out and about and wouldn't know when we would be feeding him.  I know you can fill bottles with hot water and have the formula in container as we do that at home but we thought for ease the pre made bottles would be easier.  It was a quick way of ensuring Baby M was fed.

Car

My mum bought us a travel mobile from Babies r us.  I wasn't sure whether Baby M would be interested as he sleeps a lot in the car at home but it was a great way to keep him entertained!! He loved the dangling parts and looking at himself in the mirror.  We have kept it in the car since we came home as he loved it so much.  We also have a Lindam mirror so I can see him in my rear view mirror.  Mr M can also see him if he turns round.  It is more for our reassurance as we can see him and check he is ok even when he's sleeping.

Bathing

When my mum said she had found a travel bath I wasn't that convinced but when we used the Tippitoes folding bath we were pleasantly surprised.  The bath is a really good size, it is supposed to last baby until they are 2.  The plug is blue and turns white when the water is too hot.  It also folds completely flat meaning it is great for travelling.

Formula - to change or not to change

Feeding a baby via formula seems quite complicated, or is it just me?!?

Firstly you have to pick a brand - apparently Cow & Gate and Aptamil are made in the same factory so there isn't much/any difference.

We chose Aptamil, mainly because a friend of mine had some tubs she hadn't opened which she gave to us, saved us some pennies.

Baby M has had issues with reflux and with his bowels, every time I talk to the health visitor she tells me not to worry but as a neurotic first time mum I can't help but worry.  I want my baby boy to be ok.  The health visitor keeps telling me that baby bowels need to become rounded as they are flat and this can take time, this is why babies struggle to poo.  She states that Baby M is pooing within the guidelines and his belly isn't hard therefore not to worry.  She states that his bowels will be fine by 3 months old.  Baby M also has reflux, not bad reflux but he does spit up and he appears to get a bad taste in his mouth.  After talking to our health visitor about this again she stated we could try the reflux milk if we wanted but that usually they don't recommend you change milk.

We went and bought a tub of reflux Aptamil (not cheap I may add!!).  The milk was MUCH thicker than the first milk, Baby M had to use more effort to drink it plus at the end you had loads of foam.  Good news Baby M didn't spit up.  After 3 feeds though he started to cry quite shrilly, going onto forums (again love the internet) people had put that their babies had become constipated on reflux milk.  Neurotic mum kicked in and I began to worry about whether we had made the right decision.

Mr M and I had a long discussion.  Yes Baby M spit up and seemed to get a bad taste in his mouth but were we replacing a small problem with a big problem?? He wasn't projectile vomiting and whilst he didn't like the taste of spit up/reflux he wasn't distressed and was still eating regularly.  Babies have reflux due to their oesophagus not being fully developed, this generally sorts itself by 12 months.  Do we need to be feeding our baby a thick feed just to make our lives a little easier?!?

We decided to go back on the first milk but make sure we feed him more upright and wind him often. Since returning to the first milk we have only had one episode of bad spit up, other than there there hasn't been that much.  When we gave Baby M the reflux milk he developed really bad wind, he was pumping loads but that seems to have stopped.  We are still waiting for a poo but I'm not so neurotic about that at the moment.  He seems happy and content which is all that matters

Do you change the formula or are you replacing one issue with another?! In our situation we decided it was better the devil you know.
